Kermode bears (Ursus americanus kermodei), locally referred to in the Canadian Pacific coast as ghost bears, are a sacred figure in the legends of the native Kitasoo people. Elders pass on the legend that Wee'get the Creator, responsible for transforming a barren, frozen rock into a fertile garden, turned every 10th black bear white to remind the people of the Ice Age.
